Confidentiality & Records
What you discuss in your counselling sessions is private and confidential. As such, the counsellor requires your written permission to speak to a third party (e.g. your doctor, another service) about your treatment. There are only two exceptions to this:
1) if there is a risk of harm to you or to someone else and
2) if a court of law subpoenas documentation.
Records about your treatment are kept secure in protected computer files with only your Counsellor having access to this record.
Important: When you are referred on a mental health care plan you will then have a mental health record. This record can be accessed by interested parties such as government bodies, insurance and superannuation companies. This will be discussed with you prior to release of any information.
Your counsellor will develop strategies and a plan with you to assist in the management of a crisis if you are at risk and if this is appropriate as part of your treatment. However, this is a private counselling practice and, as such, is not equipped to offer crisis services.
